BIPOC communities breathe in more polluted air than white communities.
A study by PNAS found that, "non-white Hispanics breathe in 63 percent more air pollution than caused by their own consumption, while black people are exposed to about 56 percent more than they cause. As for white Americans, the study found they breathe in 17 percent less air pollution than they cause"
Indigenous communities living amongst industrialized areas will suffer long term affects from polluted rivers. Studies from 2011 found that the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation, show higher rates of pollutants amongst young adults. This health crisis amongst Indigenous peoples is a cause of the near by industries contaminating the tribes rivers and food source. Women who have consumed possibly contaminated fish, indicate toxin levels in their breastmilk leaving them at fear when breastfeeding their newborns.
